FAQs

How much does Cologuard cost?

The out-of-pocket cost for Cologuard is $382, but only if you choose not to go through insurance. You can always use your insurance if you prefer, but you may be charged more in the event that your insurance does not cover your Cologuard prescription.

How do I get a Cologuard test?

Cologuard is a prescription stool test provided by Exact Sciences. In order to receive Cologuard, you must receive a prescription from a doctor, such as your AgelessRx provider.

To get Cologuard, you can start by setting up a virtual visit with your AgelessRx provider, who will determine if Cologuard is right for you and provide a prescription if appropriate.

If you’re approved, your prescription will be sent to Exact Sciences, who will contact you directly to help you complete the process.

Please note that AgelessRx only provides doctor consultation to see if Cologuard is right for you. AgelessRx does not provide the Cologuard collection kit. You must complete your payment with Exact Sciences to receive your Cologuard collection kit.

How does Cologuard work?

Cologuard detects specific changes in the DNA and the presence of blood in your stool, which can be indicators of cancer or precancerous polyps. Each sample is analyzed by a US-licensed laboratory technician at Exact Sciences, the pathology company who launched Cologuard, who will deliver a positive or negative confirmation based on your sample.

Please note that a negative result does not rule out colorectal cancer, and a positive result is not a diagnosis. Cologuard should be used in addition to routine cancer screening tests with your healthcare provider, who will help you interpret your results and advise you on next steps.

How accurate is Cologuard?

Cologuard can detect 94% of colorectal cancer and 42% of precancerous polyps. Cologuard also has a 13% false-positive rate, with an 8% false-negative rate.

Cologuard has been shown to be effective in detecting certain DNA and blood markers associated with colorectal cancer, but Cologuard does not provide a positive or negative diagnosis of cancer. Like all tests, it is not 100% accurate and may not detect all cancers. For this reason, it’s best utilized as an alternative screening tool for those at average risk of colorectal cancer, and not as a replacement for colonoscopies. You should consult your primary care physician about your Cologuard results to determine next steps.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

Cologuard is indicated for adults aged 45 or older who are at average risk of colorectal cancer. Cologuard is not a replacement for colonoscopy.

Cologuard is contraindicated for the following conditions:

  • High risk for colorectal cancer
  • Inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease
  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Blood in stool for any reason

Patients who are at high risk for colorectal cancer, including those with a personal or family history of colorectal cancer, should consult their primary care physician to determine the best screening methods.

There are no specific dietary or medication restrictions for Cologuard, and there is no special preparation recommended before you collect your sample.

Exact Sciences cannot properly analyze samples that are diarrhetic or excessively bloody. If you are sick, have diarrhea, or notice excessive blood or urine in your stool, you should seek urgent care or wait until your bowel movements stabilize.
