What if, as a society, we dedicated more resources to longevity research, taking disease prevention beyond the pure medical system? What if we infused longevity into every aspect of society to build a disease prevention infrastructure? Could we end the fight against aging and transform our system from sick-care to healthcare?

That’s the mission of Vitalism, a movement to optimize our lifespan through science and reform, and their mission may be just the push we need to see everyone enjoy extra healthy years.

Creating an Ecosystem of Longevity

Achieving longevity for all is a big goal, one that requires an infrastructure centered on health optimization and disease prevention.

While medical research is pivotal for advancing longevity, Vitalism believes societal actions such as policy reform, legislation, and even giving incentives to providers to focus on early intervention and disease prevention could be key to measurable change.

A Shift in Focus

Currently, less than 0.1% of healthcare venture funds is dedicated to researching longevity. Meanwhile, we spend billions each year on researching cancer, with minimal results: we’re no closer to curing cancer or other major age-related disease – known as the four horsemen of death – than we were several decades ago. Overall, we spend over $1 trillion each year treating chronic disease, while funding for longevity research peaked at $7.65 billion in 2021.

On the other hand, longevity research has progressed rapidly in this same time frame, all with limited funding. By focusing funding on aging, the underlying cause and how to actively prevent diseases like cancer, we could make much more progress towards realizing longevity for all.

But a huge shift like this doesn’t happen overnight. We have to lay the foundation for this change to occur at all, and that’s just what Vitalism intends to do.

Small Steps to a Larger Goal

By prioritizing health optimization from multiple angles before someone develops a disease, we have the steps needed to reach our bigger goal – giving everyone extra healthy years.

Vitalism’s idea is simple: provide the building blocks that regulatory bodies need to switch their resources from sick-care to a focus on healthy aging – and in doing so, overcome the biological aging process.

One option under their plan includes offering tax incentives for retailers to offer healthier food options. Another includes greater subsidies for longevity medicines and services, and better education grants for longevity research.

Vitalism plans to approach aging from a 360-degree perspective so longevity initiatives permeate every corner of our society, allowing everyone to live to the fullest extent of their health. With their success, we could soon see these solutions adopted in our own jurisdictions.
